It is amazing at how many different things we spend money on and the amount of money we spend on them without recognizing that this could lead to financial ruin. But, it is never too late to manage your debt and save thousands. It is always important to manage your money and save a little whenever you can.
Overspending – A serious problem
Major overspending can lead to mismanaging your finances and future debt problems. A budget in this case is essential to analyze your finances to get you back on track. It will help you answer a very important question – do I spend more than I earn? If you’re spending more than you earn this means that you are overspending. However before you can resolve this problem, you will need to get an idea of how big a spending problem you have. You will need to know where the money is going so that you can prioritize what are some of the things you need and are more important and some of the things you simply want. Your wants are usually the first to be eliminated, because the things you want, you can live without. Once you have eliminated your wants, you’ll have a clearer picture of what you can and cannot afford to spend or the things you need to spend less on.
Questions to ask before you make a purchase:
- Am I getting the best value for my money?
- Can I get it cheaper elsewhere?
- Can I afford it?
- Is it a want or a need?
- Do I need to have it right now?
- Will this purchase put me in more debt?
If the answers are in the negative, you should hold off from making the purchase. It’s probably best to sleep on it before you impulse shop.
Be Honest With Yourself
Do not underestimate your debt problem or your expenditure. This will not help to resolve your spending problem or help you manage your debt effectively. Keep an accurate account of all your expenditures by writing down every single item you spend cash on, and always overestimate rather than underestimate, if need be. Then, at the end of the month deduct all your expenditures from the money you bring in for that month. This way you will have a more accurate view of where your money is going and what you need to cut back on.
Keep a Close Eye on Credit Card Debts
Credit card debt is a major problem that leads many to overspend and financial problems. If you cannot afford to make a cash purchase, it means that you cannot afford to buy the item. Buying something on credit will put you deeper in debt and could even lead you to many other financial problems. If you have to buy something on credit, pay it off in full at the end of the month so you don’t get stuck with the high interest rate.
Discipline Is Key
The most difficult part about managing your budget is sticking to it. After all you’ve been so used to spending without any restrictions, and now you have to watch every penny you spend, and on what you spend it on. But don’t look at this as a form of depriving yourself of the things you want in live. Look at managing your debt as a way to reward yourself for the things that will give you financial freedom and much more benefits in the long run. It’s going to take a little work and some time but it’s the best thing you can do for yourself and your finances.
